Research and Development

Innovative Mining Technologies and Restoration Concepts

The Research and Development section of the G.U.B. is working on national and international projects to develop new mining technologies and strategies. We support you through all stages of mining projects from the development of technical feasibility studies, to the design of pilot projects and mine plans, as well as during mine closure and restoration projects.

Focal points of the R&D section are the development of cost-effective and ecologically sustainable mining technologies and restoration concepts, the targeted structural advancement of artisanal and small-scale mining, prevention and treatment strategies for mine waters as well as feasibility, due-diligence and economic studies. Furthermore, we provide capacity building in our areas of expertise for industries, authorities and academia in the fields of hydrogeology, geochemistry, mining and geotechnics.

Our team of scientists and engineers operates worldwide in an extensive spectrum of mining projects with partners in industry, authorities and academia. As R&D section of G.U.B. we can directly build upon the comprehensive knowhow and longstanding experience of engineers and experts within the company’s following business segments: Mining and Mineral Resources, Geotechnical, Civil and Hydraulic Engineering, Water Resource Management and Soil and Contaminated Sites Remediation.  Additionally, we collaborate with Universities and research institutes such as the Helmholtz Center Dresden Rossendorf, the Fraunhofer Institutes IOSB and ISI and the Leibnitz Institute IPK Gatersleben. This crosslinking of engineering and research enables us to develop tailored, innovative technologies and ensure their implementation. In particular in our international projects local conditions often require affordable and sustainable alternatives to standard technologies. For example we developed an approach for geotechnical slope stabilization with the marketable crop Moringa olifeira and processes for metal extraction from mine waters based on biomaterials.
